Surgery is generally performed under general or spinal anaesthesia. Modern anaesthesia is safe and effective. However, there are some risks. On rare occasions, side effects from an anaesthesic can be life-threatening. Ask your anaesthetist for more information. Give your anaesthetist a full list of the medications you are currently taking, or have taken oin the past, and any allergies you may have. Hip surgery may be preformed under a spinal or epidural block that stops pain from the waist down, supplemented by a very light general anaesthetic.
